There are some countries where the local Internet Service Provider blocks access to a large number of websites.

Most notorious for these blocks are the Arabic countries. But there are many other countries where access to some websites is restricted, usually the number of restricted sites being very low. Even in the USA some websites are blocked.

The traditional way of bypassing ISP restrictions is to use a proxy server. But as proxies have proven to be very unsafe - as information( passwords, credit card numbers) passed through them was stolen, a new method appeared. It is a VPN, short name for Virtual Private Network.

What happens through a VPN is users access the Internet through an encrypted tunnel, managed by a private company. This is regarded as a very safe and recommended way of accessing Internet, even if you don't have any blocked website, due to the powerful encryption and the firewall the VPN server has in place.

A VPN connection on the client machine can be configured using either PPTP protocol or the L2TP protocol. L2TP is regarded as more secure than PPTP as it requires an authentication from the machine as well, not only from the user.

Using a VPN account many people are happily accessing blocked websites in the Middle East.

In a few countries around the world - like Oman, Belize - the local ISP's have blocked the PPTP and L2TP protocols. So people living in Oman could not access blocked websites through a VPN due to PPTP and L2TP restrictions.

Luckily, technology is evolving. A new VPN connectivity type has recently appeared, called the Open VPN. It is using SSL - short for Secure Sockets Layer. This uses a port which is never blocked by the ISP, not even by Omantel.

There are few companies which sell Open VPN accounts, designed especially to be used when both PPTP and L2TP are blocked.

SSL VPN is the only possible way for people in Oman to access blocked websites through a secure channel. Browse the page at the end of this article to find out more about our offer of SSL VPN accounts.

The Open VPN protocol is exactly what residents of Oman need, where Omantel blocks a large number of websites. Anyone living in Oman can connect to a Open VPN server and access the blocked websites.

What is great about a VPN is that you can be anywhere in the world, but once connected to the VPN server, you will look as if you're in the USA, UK or Germany, depending what server type you connect to.

This proves useful where there are location based restrictions from the website part, not only from the ISP.
